Description:
Title: The Burnside problem and geometric diversity of periodic groups.
Abstract: A group G is said to be periodic if every element of G has finite order. Obviously, every finite group is periodic. Do there exist finitely generated, infinite, periodic groups? This question was asked by William Burnside in 1902 and served as a catalyst for research in group theory throughout the 20th century. We will discuss classical results concerning this problem and the recent progress in proving geometric diversity of finitely generated periodic groups.
