Title: On the second bounded cohomology of some left orderable groups
Abstract: The study of groups of homeomorphisms of the line has seen a lot of growing interest in the past few years. These include Thompson's group F, and a whole zoo of generalizations with various interesting properties and curious behaviours. Guided by questions of Grigorchuk, Calegari, and Navas - which were solved in the past three months - we will look at the second bounded cohomology of these groups, and see how dynamical properties can be used to prove vanishing results. This is based on joint works with Yash Lodha.

Description:
Title: Fourier decoupling
Abstract: Functions whose Fourier transform is supported on a submanifold of R^d naturally appear as solutions of linear PDEs and as exponential sums in number theory. Decoupling inequalities are certain L^p estimates for such functions. I will introduce these estimates in more detail and present my results in this area, which go in the direction of number
theoretic applications.
