MenuDistance Master's degree: Teaching Track
This option is aimed primarily at preparing students to teach mathematics at secondary school and junior college levels. Students acquire a solid mathematical background together with the necessary pedagogical skills and support coursework from other departments, such as Statistics and Education. The main emphasis is to produce future educators who will provide high-quality content-based instruction.Degree Plan Requirements
- Requires a minimum of 36 credit hours, at least 24 of which must be in mathematics.
- There must be 15 credit hours in specialized mathematics courses
selected from the following:
- MATH 645 (Survey of Mathematical Problems I);
- MATH 646 (Survey of Mathematical Problems II);
- MATH 629 (History of Mathematics);
- MATH 632 (A Transition to Graduate Level Mathematics);
- MATH 696 (Mathematical Communication and Technology).
- There must be 9 hours of graduate distance mathematics courses,
selected from the following:
- MATH 602 (Methods and Applications of PDE);
- MATH 609 (Numerical Analysis);
- MATH 613 (Graph Theory);
- MATH 614 (Dynamical Systems and Chaos);
- MATH 615 (Introduction to Classical Analysis);
- MATH 619 (Applied Probability);
- MATH 630 (Combinatorics);
- MATH 640 (Linear Algebra for Applications);
- MATH 647 (Mathematical Modeling);
- MATH 660 (Computational Linear Algebra);
- MATH 662 (Seminar in Algebra);
- MATH 664 (Seminar in Applied Math);
- MATH 666 (Seminar in Geometry);
- MATH 673 (Information, Secrecy and Authentications I);
- Math 685 (Directed Studies*);
- MATH 689 (Special Topics).
* Math 685 (typically 1 credit hour, no more 3 credit hours) will be allowed only with the permission of the Committee Chair and the Director of the Program.
- There must be 6 credit hours of supporting coursework selected
from the following:
- One graduate courses in Education (the student has the option
of an emphasis at either the secondary or collegiate
level). Suggested courses include:*
- EDAD 601 (College Teaching);
- EDAD 609 (Public School Laws);
- EDAD 610 (Higher Education Law);
- EHRD 616 (Methods of Teaching Adults);
- EDTC 608 (Foundations of Distance Learning);
- EDCI 638 (Trends in Curriculum and Instruction);
- EDCI 642 (Multicultural Education: Theory, Research, and Practice);
- EDCI 644 (Curriculum Development);
- One graduate course in statistical methods. Suggested courses include:**
- STAT 601 (Statistical Analysis);
- STAT 608 (Regression Analysis);
- STAT 630 (Mathematical Statistics);
- STAT 651 (Statistics in Research I);
- One graduate courses in Education (the student has the option
of an emphasis at either the secondary or collegiate
level). Suggested courses include:*
- This leaves 6 of 36 credits to be chosen in consultation with the student's advisor.(Note that at least 3 out these 6 credits must be either in Mathematics or Statistics.)
** STAT 652 or STAT 653 is allowed in place of your Education course with permission of the Director of the Program.
**Math 619 is allowed in place of your Statistics course with permission of the Director of the Program.
