Graduate Teaching Assistantships
Stipends for Ph.D. students in good standing in the department are $2,350.00 per month for 9 months. Currently we are unable to offer support to MS students. Summer support is guaranteed the first year while further Summer support is contingent upon good standing in the department and the availability of funds. In recent years, the Mathematics Department has always been able to provide summer support. In addition, the majority of our research faculty have research grants which include summer support for Ph.D. students.
Graduate Assistants for their 21 first semesters (7 years) qualify for in-state tuition and fees. The Mathematics Department covers University tuition and fees for Ph.D. students in good standing during the first 11 semesters (not counting summer semesters) independently if the Ph.D. student has a MS degree or not.
After the above time period, Teaching Assistantships are available for a limited time for Ph.D. students in good standing. University/College required tuition and fees are covered contingent upon the availability of funds and student performance.
Ph.D. students beyond their 11th semester can elect to be transferred to a Graduate Assistant Lecturer (GAL). More information on this is below.

The Student Business Services Office maintains tuition/fee charts to help students determine the cost of attendance. International Student Services maintains a special tuition/fee chart just for International students. Students supported on assistantships are eligible to enroll in the University's health insurance plans and receive a contribution from the State to cover a portion of their insurance premiums.
Workload for Graduate Teaching Assistants
Our Graduate Assistant duties are light in comparison to many other departments in the nation. We strive to keep workloads to a modest number of hours per week to ensure that students can adequately concentrate on their studies and successfully finish their degrees.
Typical duties of a Graduate Assistant are:
- Working Help sessions (basically one-on-one tutoring), or
- Conducting Recitations sessions and overseeing computer labs for Calculus classes, or
- Grading
There are also opportunities for Graduate Assistants to teach their own course.
Fellowships and Graduate Research Assistantships
Highly qualified applicants are nominated by the Department for a variety of fellowships and research assistantships. These include:
- Graduate Diversity Fellowships (3 year award of stipend plus tuition and fees for PhD students; awarded on university-wide competitive basis).
- LSAMP-BTD Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation-Bridge to the Doctorate
- Dr. Carl Pearcy Endowed Fellowships for entering graduate students.
All applicants are automatically considered for all forms of departmental financial support. Those seeking fall admission with possible fellowship support are encouraged to complete their applications by December 15. In addition, the majority of our research faculty have research grants which include support for students to work on their research projects.
Graduate Assistant Lecturer (GAL)
The department offers this option to students who have gone over the period in which their University tuition and fees are covered by the department and are very close to graduation. Graduate Assistant Lecturers are only required to register for 1 credit hour and the corresponding University tuition/fees will be covered by the department. However, GALs must be instructor of record for one class and finish all the work for graduation by the end of the semester. The selection of Graduate Assistant Lecturers will be based on departmental need and the student's previous performance in their TA duties.Outside Forms of Financial Support
