Computational Resources for Scientific Computing

The Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing group maintains a number of shared compute servers that can be used for software development and running compute jobs.

Current Load on the below Servers

Available compute servers

The following machines are available locally within the department (for access to compute clusters, see below):

Machine name Hardware Purpose
strange 48 x Opteron 6174 (2.2 GHz)
64 GB of memory
charm 32 x Opteron 6328 (3.2 GHz)
512 GB of memory
up 64 x Opteron 6378 (2.4 GHz)
128 GB of memory
down 64 x Opteron 6378 (2.4 GHz)
128 GB of memory
bottom 48 x Opteron 6174 (2.2 GHz)
128 GB of memory
top 64 x Opteron 6380 (2.5 GHz)
512 GB of memory
wplus 64 x Opteron 6378 (2.4 GHz)
256 GB of memory
wminus 56 x Intel Xeon E5-2697 (2.6 GHz)
512 GB of memory
wzero 32 x Intel Xeon E5-2640 (2.6 GHz)
256 GB of memory
This machine supports visualization and has a high-end graphics card. Instructions for use are here.
schubert 24 x Opteron 8435 (2.6 GHz)
64 GB of memory
Reserved for Frank Sottile's research group
tester 64 x Opteron 6376 (2.3 GHz)
128 GB of memory
Reserved for automated regression tests

Each of these machines were bought by either Andrea Bonito, Jean-Luc Guermond, Bojan Popov, or previous members of the group, but they can be used by all members of the group. An account on one of these machines is good for all of them. To get an account, send an email to the math helpdesk with a CC: to Jean-Luc Guermond.

Filesystems

Like from all departmental machines, you will have access to your own /u/username directory. This file system is backed up but has relatively limited disk space (for example, faculty have a quota of 5GB).

On the other hand, the top file server exports a filesystem with directories /w/username with currently some 6TB of (remote) disk space to all of the machines listed above. It is backed up at regular intervals, though not necessarily as often as the /u/username directories (due to the enormous amount of data on these disks).

There is no quota on how much disk space you use on /w/username, but be a good citizen.

Software

All machines above have most typical development software installed. If you need a package installed that isn't there, let us know.

Cluster computers

If you need more compute resources, you can also ask for accounts on the Brazos cluster and the Texas A&M Supercomputing Center.
